I have never truly done New Year resolutions. I have never found the appeal of choosing the last day of the year to criticise myself rather than celebrate myself. The endless influx of how to be less (thinner), have less (minimalist) and seek less (focused) has always rubbed me the wrong way.
If anything, we should be seeking
more
. The cultural phenomenon of “that girl”, an idealised, ultra-disciplined woman who has her life completely put-together seems… horrible?
So, as I prepare for the new year, here is the girl, the woman, I would like to be. Here is “that girl” for me.
She knows and seeks to learn about women: writers, artists, economists, researchers, freedom fighters, advocates…
She is always laughing.
She is willing to be a few minutes late to avoid feeling stressed.
She spends time in museums, art galleries, book stores.
She advocates for herself.
She leans into her weird interests.
She speaks several languages.
She is proud of her background and origins.
She spends money when she falls in love.
Now figuring out who she is to me is only the first step. Figuring out how to become her becomes the second.
I read and watch documentaries about women writers, artists, economists, researchers, freedom fighters, advocates as much as possible.
I am always around people who make me feel positive and light-hearted.
I don’t rush as soon as I wake up. I don’t forget to brush my teeth or tie my shoes because I’m already out the door.
I go to museums, art galleries and book stores as much as possible. I look out for new exhibitions, days with free entry and book launches.
I prioritise and advocate for my physical and mental health.
I lean into learning more about crystals and other interests that are characterised as weird or looked down upon.
I improve my skills in the languages I already speak (French, English, Danish and Spanish).
I learn more about my background and origins (I look into learning Corsican and learning more about religion).
I spend money when I see something I know I would love and use (I buy the expensive books, I buy the handmade mug, I invest in what makes me feel good and more like myself).
The second list is always the one I like to print out, write down or save somewhere. I always find it easier to have action oriented goals so that I know exactly how to implement them in my life.
But that’s just me, you might feel differently. And that’s important to notice, to think about. There is no point in creating and curating a list for someone else.
It is important to understand what matters to you. What you would like to invest your time, energy and money in. You cannot begin a goal with a critique, a punishment. You must value yourself in your goals. Do not seek to completely change, seek to lean in, do more of what you are already doing.
That girl is not some stranger, she is you. Find a way to recognise that. Learn about yourself and what you like about yourself before you make a list for the new year.
The list above will not work for you. It only works for me. It is a list to be more
like me
in every way that matters
to me
. What’s yours?
