Hello my love,
There is nothing more tragic than knowing what you’re capable of and watching yourself do nothing about it.
I use to put off so much of my life in hopes of returning to it later. My goals, dreams and ambitions, the parts of myself that needed work, I put them all off out of fear of confronting them now and later always seemed like a better time but I started thinking, what if death reaches for me before I reach for them?
Too morbid? Sorry.
I think about my life a lot and when one thinks about life, one must inevitably think about death. I may die before acting upon my dreams and the thought of that made me sick, I could die a coward.
Procrastination may be my worst quality. I’ve said that I’ve become better but it is something that never really leaves you, just something you learn to control. How? By measuring your comfort against everything you stand to risk.
It’s a sickening feeling. You know you’re capable enough, creative enough, resourceful enough. You can envision the finished project, the life you want, the person you’re trying to become. Yet the distance between that vision and your present reality keeps growing. It’s easy to take comfort in your potential because it allows you to imagine success without you having to risk failure.
You can keep telling yourself you’re capable of greatness without ever having to find out what happens when you try. You’ve made a home of your potential but graveyards are full of men who had “potential”. When you’re gone, no one will talk about all the things you could’ve done, they’ll talk about the things you did. There is no prize for being the person who could’ve been great if they tried.
And almost. That word, does it not make your skin crawl? To hear your capabilities reduced to a likelihood?
We all have different experiences and different reasons for holding the future off , however I do think we all share a fear.
It may be that what you want matters so much that it feels terrifying. You would rather preserve the fantasy of a perfect outcome than produce something imperfect. It may be that you are overwhelmed by the sheer number of things you want to become, so you become paralysed by the decision of where to begin.
Understanding where your fear lies is the first step to doing better. There is only so much planning, journalling, thinking , and envisioning that can substitute for doing. You’ll exhaust yourself avoiding reality. You’ll bury yourself in self-loathing and guilt, the answer is no longer another revelation about yourself. It is to sit down and begin.
Stop waiting until you feel ready. Your first draft or efforts to begin don’t have to be perfect. No success has ever happened overnight, even if it may have seemed that way. Every turning point is an accumulation of a thousand small sacrifices. Some days you will feel inspired; other days, the work will feel dull, difficult, and unromantic.
If you only work when the conditions are perfect, your ambitions will remain dependent on circumstances you cannot control.
You will be uncertain and afraid. Do it scared
So please FOCUS.
You have spent enough time imagining what your life could look like. Enough time making lists, making plans, waiting for the right mood, the right circumstances, the right time.
No one is coming to do the work for you. No one is coming to save you from yourself.
You have to do it . When the task is tedious. When the result is uncertain. When you would rather do anything else.
Do not spend your entire life standing at the threshold of something you were perfectly capable of entering.
Focus. Begin. Give yourself a chance to become everything you’ve always imagined.
With love,
A.
