you can tell a lot about how someone sees themselves by the person they have chosen to love. the way we are treated by the person closest to us becomes part of the way we understand ourselves. their tenderness, or the absence of it, can shape what we believe we are worth.

we accept the love we think we deserve. the sentence is difficult to sit with because so many of us have spent years defending relationships that hurt us. we learn someone’s moods, understand their fears, make allowances for their past. we become so good at explaining why they struggle to love us well that we forget we are still the ones being hurt.

you can spend years trying to become easier to love. more patient, less sensitive, less demanding. you rehearse what you want to say because you already know how it might be received. you apologise for needing reassurance. you convince yourself that if you could just understand them a little better, give them a little more time, ask for a little less, things might finally feel different. somewhere along the way, you begin to confuse being chosen with being cherished.

and it breaks my heart to think about how many people have spent their most beautiful years trying to earn the affection of someone they would have given the world to. how many have mistaken the occasional beautiful moment for proof that everything else is worth enduring. how many have become strangers to their own needs because being without someone frightened them more than being unhappy beside them.

being loved should never require you to build a defence for your own feelings.

but the sentence works in another direction, too. what does it mean when you have chosen someone who treats you with extraordinary care? someone who listens when you speak, remembers the little things you mention, and can disagree with you without making you feel foolish for having a different opinion. someone who sees you at your worst and still recognises the person they love.

it is a blessing to be loved by someone who believes in you before you have learned how to believe in yourself. they encourage you to take the chance, apply for the job, make the thing you have been frightened to begin. they see you fail and their opinion of you remains intact. eventually, their faith begins to follow you into places they have never been. you hear their words when you are sitting alone at your desk, doubting yourself over something they would have encouraged you to try.

their love becomes part of the way you speak to yourself. you become more patient with your mistakes. you stop treating every insecurity as a flaw you must hide. you begin to consider that perhaps the life you want is within your reach, that you are capable of more than you have allowed yourself to attempt. someone else’s belief in you helps you recognise a person you had difficulty seeing on your own.

and naturally, you want to give that love back. you want to remember the things that worry them, celebrate the things they are proud of, and make room for them on the days when they cannot quite make room for themselves. you want to keep discovering them. you want to know what makes them happy, what frightens them, what they dream about when they allow themselves to dream without limits. loving them makes you want to become more considerate, more attentive, more capable of caring for another person.

a good relationship does not mean you never hurt each other or get things wrong. two people can love each other deeply and still have difficult conversations, misunderstandings, and days when they fail to recognise what the other needs. what matters is the willingness to listen, to take responsibility, to make an effort that lasts beyond an apology. you should be able to tell someone they have hurt you without fearing that the truth will cost you their affection.

the person you choose cannot determine your worth. their love does not create it, and their inability to recognise it cannot take it away. but the person beside you will influence how you experience yourself. they can make you feel that every need is an inconvenience, or help you understand that you are allowed to have needs at all. they can make you ashamed of your tenderness, or give you a place where you no longer feel embarrassed by how much you care.

perhaps that is what makes choosing someone such a deeply personal decision. you are choosing the person with whom you will share your tired evenings, your uncertain plans, your ambitions, your disappointments, and all the versions of yourself you have yet to become. you are choosing someone who will witness your life from close enough to affect how you feel about living it.

if you have found someone who treats your heart with care, let yourself recognise the gift of it. notice the patience, the consideration, the small decisions they make to understand you. never become so accustomed to being loved well that you stop appreciating the person who makes that love possible. and remember that you deserve to offer yourself some of that same kindness, too.

because there is a beautiful difference between being grateful that someone chose you and being grateful for the person you chose. one is relief at having been wanted. the other is the happiness of knowing that the person beside you makes your life feel more like your own.

may you find a love in which you can be entirely yourself, where tenderness is returned, where your ambitions are taken seriously, and where neither person has to abandon themselves to keep the relationship alive.

may loving someone teach you to recognise your own goodness, until the kindness they have always seen in you becomes something you can finally see, too.
