i have been trying to replace some of my mindless scrolling with things that hold my attention for longer than thirty seconds, and one of my favourite discoveries is that yale has an entire collection of university lectures available on youtube and their website for free.

real professors teaching fascinating subjects, without having to enrol in an ivy league university or pay an extraordinary amount of tuition. i’ve picked five lectures across psychology, philosophy and the humanities that make for excellent intellectual rabbit holes.

1. why we’re so bad at predicting what makes us happy

professor paul bloom | psychology

it’s remarkable how much time we spend pursuing things we’re convinced will make us happy, only to discover that the satisfaction doesn’t last quite as long as expected. this lecture explores why we’re surprisingly bad at predicting our future happiness and how quickly we adapt to things we once desperately wanted.

2. why your memory can’t always be trusted

professor paul bloom | psychology

a fascinating look at how memory works and why something you remember vividly might still be inaccurate. bloom explores how suggestion can influence our memories and why our brains sometimes convince us of things that didn’t happen quite the way we remember.

3. what freud can teach us about the stories we love

professor paul fry | literary theory

for anyone who loves reading and wants to understand fiction beyond the plot. fry explores unconscious desires and how freud’s ideas have influenced the way literary critics interpret stories. particularly interesting if you’ve ever wondered why certain fictional characters stay with you long after you’ve finished a book.

4. what ancient roman homes reveal about status and taste

professor diana e. e. kleiner | art history

an unexpectedly interesting trip into the homes of wealthy romans in pompeii. the lecture explores how architecture reflected social standing and how people decorated their homes to communicate wealth and sophistication. turns out, people have been expressing their personalities through interior design for considerably longer than pinterest has existed.

5. how to live when you know life is finite

professor shelly kagan | philosophy

one of those lectures that stays in your head long after you’ve finished watching. kagan explores how knowing that life will eventually end should influence the goals we pursue and the decisions we make. a wonderful philosophical rabbit hole about what makes a life worth living.

my suggestion is to pick one lecture this week and treat it like a film you’ve been meaning to watch. put your phone somewhere inconvenient, grab a notebook and give yourself permission to spend an hour learning about something that has absolutely nothing to do with your responsibilities.

the nicest thing about becoming intellectually curious again is discovering how much there is to learn once you stop expecting every spare moment to be entertaining.
